How To Get Free Gas

Affording gas on a tight budget may seem impossible right now.

Keep reading to see how you can get free gas via various organizations.

You may have had trouble paying for gas in the past if you were on a limited income. Now, however, you may cringe at the mere thought of driving since fuel prices are sky-high. You could combat high gas prices by driving less or taking public transportation. Or you could also try the following ways to get free gas, should you qualify.

Organizations That Offer Free Gas Cards And Vouchers

Salvation Army

It’s no secret that the Salvation Army helps families with food, shelter, toys for their kids during the holiday, and more. Depending on your location and income level, you may be able to get gas vouchers from the Salvation Army. As you can imagine, such vouchers are limited, so any availability will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

To get a free gas voucher from the Salvation Army, contact your local office. Ask if they offer gas assistance and what’s required to get it. You will likely have to show proof of income and your expenses to show that you have a financial need and cannot afford gas on your own. If approved, you may get gas vouchers for essential trips, such as work, training, school, job interviews, doctor’s appointments, etc.

The Society Of St. Vincent de Paul

This global organization offers assistance with rent, food, utilities, and clothing. On occasion, St. Vincent de Paul also provides gas vouchers to help those with limited incomes afford fuel for their vehicles.

While your mileage may vary, contact St. Vincent de Paul and see if they currently offer gas vouchers. Eligibility for any form of assistance from this organization will be based on income, but you could qualify by currently receiving government benefits.

As with the Salvation Army, the use of gas vouchers here will likely be limited to essential trips for work, healthcare, etc.

Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT)

Medicaid funds this program that offers gas assistance so people can attend medical appointments without paying for costly fuel out of their own pockets. You can be eligible if you’re on Medicaid or receive assistance from other government programs.

Should you qualify for NEMT, you will be reimbursed for gas after visiting the doctor. To get started, call the phone number on the back of your Medicaid card. Once you reach a representative, say that you want to learn more about the NEMT program.

211

Dialing 211 on your phone will connect you with a local operator that can offer assistance for housing, food, healthcare, and more. While all of those services can make it easier to afford fuel, ask the operator if they know where you can get free gas vouchers in your area.

Catholic Charities

As with other organizations in this list, Catholic Charities offers many types of assistance to those who need it most. Go here to find Catholic Charities near you, then call them and ask if they offer free gas cards.
